Overview
Complete or partial removable dentures require adhesives or pastes to remain in your mouth, but implant-supported dentures are connected to metal posts in your jawbone so they remain stable and secure. This means that the dentures won’t slip or move, even when speaking or eating. With more support and security, patients with implant-supported dentures can rest assured that their teeth will stay in place. Implant-supported dentures look great and can be treated just like your natural teeth. At My Island Dental, Merritt Island, FL patients can have custom implant dentures that look natural and feel comfortable. Best Candidates
You may be a candidate for implant-supported dentures if you’re currently using removable dentures or if you are missing most of your teeth and need dentures. A big advantage over removable dentures, implant-supported dentures don’t require soaking and adhesives. Implant dentures have fewer food restrictions compared to removable dentures and they can be cleaned just like your natural teeth. The implant replaces the natural roots of your teeth, so your jawbone and gums are unlikely to become weak. During your appointment, Dr. Tran will examine the current condition of your mouth to decide if your jawbone and gums are able to hold the implants. If needed, bone and/or gum grafting may be performed to strengthen specific areas before the implants are placed.
What to Expect
Prior to any treatment, Dr. Tran will complete a thorough exam, including digital imaging to evaluate the condition of your jawbone and gums. If your gums or jawbone are not strong enough to hold the implants, a gum and/or bone graft surgery may be performed. As soon as the grafted area has healed and is sufficiently dense, the implants can be placed.
You will be given a local anesthesia to numb your mouth before the procedure. Sedation options can be discussed if the procedure is lengthy, or if it helps you feel more comfortable. Dr. Tran will make surgical incisions through your gums and place implant posts in the holes in the jawbone. For dentures, four or more implants are usually needed for each arch. The incisions will be closed with part of the post showing above the gums. A temporary denture will be used to cover the posts as your mouth heals in 4 – 6 months. The implants will integrate with your gums and jawbone. Once Dr. Tran feels the implants are strong enough, your custom-made dentures can be connected to the posts and fitted.
Recovery
Implant-supported dentures should be cleaned like natural teeth with daily brushing, flossing, and mouthwash. You should continue to attend yearly dental cleanings, exams, and follow-up appointments at My Island Dental to have the wear and fit of your dentures checked. With the proper care, implant-supported dentures can last several years. Dr. Tran can help you decide when your implants or dentures should be replaced or repaired.
